Healthcare Payment Revolution: The HPS Story

Health Payments Systems (HPS) is the one-stop shop for streamlining your employees’ healthcare billing and payment experience. As the third annual winner of the Design for Health Award at the HxRefactored 2017 conference, HPS has a rich history of helping employers manage healthcare in a way that cuts through the confusion—a history that began over a decade ago.

In 2005, HPS was founded by Jim Brindley. Brindley, who argued, “There’s got to be a better way,” envisioned a credit-card like healthcare statement that combines all bills and Explanation of Benefits into a single source document. So, Jim Brindley and the other HPS founders along with a team of experienced healthcare individuals, set out to create the patented technology to create the statement. Then, to prove the technology worked, the team began partnering to develop a network of providers in Wisconsin, who continue to be a part of HPS’s comprehensive provider network today. Providers benefit from HPS providing payment (both plan and member portions) for clean claims usually within 20 days, enhancing payment efficiency. In addition, more employer clients began to use HPS, many of whom have been with HPS for almost 10 years. The starter pistol had sounded and HPS was on a twelve-year journey to its current place among the most transformational healthcare solutions on the market.

In 2011, HPS brought Jay Fulkerson on board as President and CEO. Under Fulkerson’s leadership, from 2012 to 2014, HPS was able to substantially expand the provider network across Wisconsin, adding some of the largest hospitals in Southeastern WI, ultimately growing the network to over 96% of the market. This huge expansion led to increased profitability for the company. Amidst the trajectory created by Fulkerson, in 2014, they hired Terry Rowinski to evolve the IT infrastructure. Rowinski made his own mark and later became COO and President and has recently been named CEO as well.

Of course, there were hurdles along the way. A system of all-in-one payments was a revolutionary idea that required progressive thinking and bold action. With national health plans attempting to garner Wisconsin market share, but providing a less comprehensive consolidation program, HPS charged forward and continued its growth. In doing so, they proved undoubtedly that the concept of a single statement was not only possible, but preferable.

Today, Health Payment Systems offers a fully outsourced technology and services solution that delivers an enhanced consumer experience that no one else offers in healthcare.
